'After all we've done for Wayne': Alex Ferguson admits he's dismayed that Rooney wants to leave Man United after club stood by him in sex scandals"

Sir Alex Ferguson has confirmed that Wayne Rooney wants to leave the Manchester United.

The Old Trafford boss admitted he was stunned to learn his £90,000-a-week striker won't even enter talks about a new contract.

And in an extraordinarily frank interview before tomorrow's Champions League game against Turkish champions Bursaspor, Ferguson questioned the striker's respect for the club.

'I was in the office on August 14 when (United chief executive David Gill) told me he’d had a call from (Rooney's) agent saying that Wayne wasn’t going to sign his contract,' said the Scot.

'So then David came across to see me. He said he couldn’t believe it and neither could I.

'I was dumbfounded, I couldn’t understand it at all because only months before he’d said he was at the biggest club in the world and he wanted to stay for life.

'We just don’t know what’s changed the boy’s mind. David was shocked, I was shocked.

'I had a meeting with the boy and he reiterated what his agent had said. He wanted to go. I said to him, "Just remember one thing: respect this club. I don’t want any nonsense from you, respect your club".

'What we’re seeing now in the media is disappointing because we’ve done everything we can for Wayne Rooney, since the minute he’s come to the club.

'We’ve always been there as a harbour for him. Any time he’s been in trouble, the advice we’ve given him – I’ve even been prepared to give him financial advice, many times.

Shocked: Manchester United's manager Alex Ferguson read out a prepared statement at the end of this morning's press conference outlining Rooney's request to leave

'But you do that for your players, not just Wayne Rooney. That’s Manchester United. This is a club which bases all its history and its tradition on the loyalty and trust between managers and players and the club.

'That goes back to the days of Sir Matt. That’s what it’s founded on. Wayne’s been a beneficiary of this help, just as Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes and all the players have been. That’s what we’re there for.'

News that the player may become available for a cut-price fee will alert rivals Manchester City, title rivals Chelsea and the big European clubs such as Real Madrid.

However, Rooney's value has diminished since the World Cup, where he appeared unfit and horribly out of sorts, a vein of form which has continued this season. He has now not scored a goal from open play in seven months and was left on the bench on Saturday against West Brom.

Ferguson insisted he had never had an argument with his star striker and that Rooney had suffered an ankle injury against Rangers in September - despite contradictory comments from the 24-year-old.

However, in a fresh blow for the striker today, he was injured in training and left the Carrington complex on crutches.

With his final comments, Ferguson, 68, did at least keep the door open for contract talks to resume but conceded: 'There’s no offer on the table for Wayne because they’re not prepared to listen to an offer. But there’s always an offer there for Manchester United to negotiate with a player. That’s still there.'

The storm has erupted just weeks after it was revealed Rooney had paid prostitutes for sex.

Although Ferguson was privately understood to be seething about the affair, United have trotted out a string of supportive comments and refused to discipline him.

Jennifer Thompson, 21, who charges £1,200 a night, claims she slept with 24-year-old Rooney, seven times in four months.

Thompson, who calls herself Juicy Jeni on her Facebook site, says she and Rooney had sex in one of Manchester’s most exclusive hotels, and visited nightclubs and casinos together.

And she further claims that Rooney even invited her back to the £4.5m home he shares with Coleen for sex while his wife was away.

It is understood his lawyers tried to fight the allegations when they first surfaced three weeks ago, but ultimately decided they were indefensible because of previous revelations about the star and prostitutes.

In 2004 it was reported that Rooney had visited brothels in Liverpool as a 16-year-old and admitted to paying for sex with a 48-year-old grandmother.

Rooney married his school sweetheart Coleen McLoughlin on June 12, 2008. She gave birth to their first child, a son called Kai Wayne Rooney, on November 2 last year.

The couple live in the Cheshire village of Prestbury.
