Texas Governor Rick Perry has given Mexico's president 48 hours to contact him with information on the ongoing efforts to find the body of an American man reportedly shot dead on a border lake.

Mr Perry said he hoped the body of David Hartley will be recovered by the time Felipe Calderón contacts him.

'If not, we're not looking hard enough,' he declared on Wednesday.Mr Hartley's wife Tiffany claims her husband was shot by Mexican pirates on Falcon Lake last week as they returned over the U.S. border on jet skis.

The lake is a section of the Rio Grande which has been plagued by pirates in the past. Mr Hartley's death though would be the first killing on the waterway. The Mexico government said in a statement it had been in contact with the U.S. over the incident and had stepped up efforts to find Mr Hartley's body.

Mrs Hartley has said her husband was shot in the head by three men chasing them in speedboats and that he fell off his jet ski and into the lake.Yesterday the 29-year-old and members of her family laid a wreath in the lake in memory of Mr Hartley.

At a press conference afterwards, she said: 'It was very emotional because I know he's out there and we just all want him back so we can give him the proper goodbye.'

Mr Perry has called on Mexico to use every resource available to find Mr Hartley's body and return it to U.S. soil.

Earlier this week Mrs Hartley was forced to deny suggestions by the Mexican police that she may killed her husband.

Speaking on Good Morning America, she said: 'It's just hard to hear it. But I can see it from their point of view. I can understand why they might think that, but it's not true... I would never think about hurting my husband. I loved him.'

The Texas Governor has also now backed up her story, claiming the couple had been sightseeing in Mexico.

'I find it really reprehensible for anyone, U.S. or Mexican, to speak otherwise,' Mr Perry said.
