Miracle make-up: Foundation that can zap acne, concealer that fights wrinkles ... yes, they DO exist
Most women's beauty regime divides into skin care (the creams and lotions you use to tackle inherent skin problems from dryness and flakiness, to spots, pigmentation, fine lines and dark circles) and make-up (the coloured stuff that you slap on to hide those inherent problems).
However, a new generation of make-up could change the traditional beauty regime for ever and do away with the need for separate skin care. From acne-zapping foundations, antiwrinkle powders, moisturising bronzers and concealers, the latest cosmetic products don't just temporarily make your skin look better, they offer long-term benefits, too.

How to create a tousled pin-up
STEP ONE
![]() |
Take three-inch wide sections of hair and wrap them around large Velcro rollers, before fixing the hair with a hair pin. Fix with hairspray. |
![]() | |
Start removing the rollers from the back, pull out the curl a little and loosely pin up at the back, creating most of the volume behind the right ear. |
STEP THREE
![]() |
Working forward over the head, keep removing the large rollers and pulling out the hair with a comb. Create a side-parting and sweep the hair over to one side so it falls loosely. Don't pin the front section but continue to loosely pin the other sections behind the right ear. |
![]() |
This look is all about casual, effortless hair, so keep it scruffy. If necessary, pull the sections out a little to give them more volume. |

How to get bronze without brass: As Lidl launches a £1 self-tan cream, our guide to the best tanning bargains
After a few months of relentless rain, and even more relentless economic gloom, the prospect of acquiring a tan for less than the price of a cup of tea is alluring. But you may be surprised that the latest place to get your ‘just got back from St Barts’ tan is none other than bargain-basement supermarket Lidl.
The Glow’N’Go Instant Tan will be offered in two formulations — matte and shimmer — and costs just £1 for 100mls. Unlike fake tans, this product won’t stain your skin, but instead creates the illusion of a tan until you want to wash it off. Tan-tastic: Leah Hardy, before, left, and after trying Lidl's Bronze Ambition Glow'N'Go
At Lidl head office, they are confident it will sell out, saying: ‘It is a one-off, as-long-as-stocks-last promotion, and it’s great for people coming back from their holidays and wanting to top up their tan.’But will women really want to get their beauty products alongside budget baked beans? And can a £1 product really give you that Elle Macpherson glow?
The truth is, Lidl has a reputation as the middle-class housewife’s guilty pleasure. While the car parks may be full of rusty Hondas rather than gleaming 4x4s, and credit cards are banned, you can stock up on such dinner party staples as Brie, rocket salad, Parma ham and Prosecco sparkling wine at rock bottom prices. And Lidl also has a record for super-cheap weekly offers that regularly sell out, and often ensure queues of bargain-hunters at the doors.

Can drinking gallons of water really banish your wrinkles? Many experts disagree with this, the ultimate beauty treatment
For years it has been one of the most basic rules of beauty: if you want a clear, youthful complexion, you must drink at least eight glasses of water every day.
Facialists, make-up artists, alternative health practitioners, nutritionists — and yes, we beauty journalists — have all agreed that a good dose of H2O will ‘flush out’ our systems, banish spots, plump out wrinkles and moisturise our skin from the inside out. It really is the elixir of great-looking skin.
Various dermatologists have suggested in recent years that this theory simply doesn’t wash, insisting the only thing maintaining moisture levels in our skin is the outer layer of skin.

Inside job: The facial done from within that's as good as a facelift
It is being hailed as the most effective way to reap the benefits of a facelift without going under the knife.
Many would argue that having a rubber-gloved beautician massage your cheeks and gums from inside your mouth can hardly be described as ‘non-invasive’.But the ‘inner facial’ is nonetheless winning A-list fans for its ability to sculpt the contours of the face and diffuse the tension around the chin, cheekbones and jawline.
The beauty treatment – which costs between £200 and £300 – claims to reshape the face by giving the inner muscles a workout.Hailed as relaxing and rejuvenating by devotees, it is also said to redefine the cheekbones and tone the complexion.

The 'one-stitch facelift' claims to be the ultimate quick fix for turkey necks, but does it work?
Given the wind-tunnel results of plastic surgery as seen on the likes of Joan Rivers, not to mention the prospect of a general anaesthetic, scars and months of recovery, it’s not surprising that a full-on facelift is about as popular as last year’s It-bag.
After all, if you want to pretend your ever-youthful looks are down to yoga and water, it doesn’t do to be seen to look as if you’ve had serious work.
For a while it seemed as if fillers and Botox would be the secret of stealth rejuvenation, but not everyone wants the chipmunk cheeks and glassy forehead that so often go with them.
So the facelift has been fighting back. But this time it’s different.
