LimeWire shuts down P2P service, looks to future

Labels:

After being found liable for copyright infringement last May, LimeWire has finally been ordered to take down the key features of its service.

Citing the program as committing and facilitating copyright infringement, the popular file-sharing client will be required to "disable the searching, downloading, uploading, file trading and/or file distribution functionality, and/or all functionality" of its software. For the RIAA this injunction ends a legal battle dating back to 2006, and closes the book on one of the most accessible and heavily used P2P programs of the last decade.

Porn Companies Trying to Screw Alleged File Sharers

Labels:

After Lucas Entertainment announced its determination to fight illegal file sharing, three other adult companies, CP Productions Inc., First Time Videos and Future Blue Inc. have begun to target online pirates.
Suits have been filed against 1,100 John Does by attorney John L. Steele at U.S. District Court in Chicago with the hope that the court will order ISPs to reveal the identity of the users behind certain IPs. CP Productions sued 300 alleged illegal file sharers in one of the suits for movie clips stolen from ChicasPlace.com in its Cowgirl Creampie section.

Shocking: Apple Approves BitTorrent App For App Store

Labels:

Apple is known for the stringent guidelines it applies when deciding which software to allow into their App Store – BitTorrent is one of the things on their ban list. However, one developer who carefully avoided the dirty word “torrent” in the submission process, eventually managed to get a BitTorrent-related App approved by Apple.

For those wondering why there are no BitTorrent-related apps in the App Store, it is because Apple notoriously bans  all applications that have anything to do with BitTorrent. Apple argues that BitTorrent is often used to infringe copyrights and that such applications are a no-go for the App Store, forcing developers to go to outlets such as Cydia.

UK ISPs Successfully Resist File-Sharing Data Handover

Labels:

In the High Court today, UK ISPs BT and Plusnet refused to hand over subscriber data to lawyers acting for independent record label, Ministry of Sound. Their objections followed the catastrophic subscriber data leak from ACS:Law two weeks ago. The hearing was adjourned until January 2011.

The continuation of the hearing between Ministry of Sound Recordings Ltd and ISPs Plusnet / BT went ahead in London’s High Court today.Lawyers Gallant Macmillan hoped that the Court would order the ISPs to hand over the identities of hundreds of alleged filesharers so that Ministry of Sound can prise a cash settlement out of them.

High-Profile, High Damages File-Sharing ‘Conviction’ Was a Farce

Labels:

In 2008, lawyers Davenport Lyons courted the mainstream media with the news that a court had found a woman guilty of sharing the game Dream Pinball 3D, an action which cost her around £16,000. Anyone with an understanding of these cases knew that something was wrong and now, thanks to yet more information from the leaked ACS:Law emails, we learn that this ‘conviction’ was built on foundations of sand.

In August 2008, we read the news here at TorrentFreak in disbelief. The BBC was reporting that Topware Interactive had won more than £16,000 following legal action against Isabella Barwinska of London, who shared a copy of their game Dream Pinball 3D using P2P.

“The damages and costs ordered by the Court are significant and should act as a deterrent,” said David Gore, a partner at Davenport Lyons who pioneered the “pay up or else” schemes multiplying in the UK and elsewhere.
