Jessica Simpson wants it known that she is 'extremely, extremely happy' that her ex-husband is heading for the altar once again.

When Nick Lachey announced his engagement to Vanessa Minnillo it was reported that Simpson was 'saddened' by the news - but not so insists the 30-year-old singer/actress.

Simpson rang into Ryan Seacrest's KIIS FM breakfast show this morning to promote her new Christmas album, Rejoyce and set the record straight at the same time.

'I am extremely, extremely happy for him,' she told the DJ. 'I couldn't be more happy for Nick.'

And when it comes to all those reports to the contrary?

'I don't know where all those rumours came from,' she said. 'My mum actually called me and told me that everybody was saying that I was "saddened." And I was just in complete shock.'

She went on to add: 'You know, our relationship was over a really long time ago, so it would be nice if everybody could move on with us and really just celebrate the love between him and Vanessa. I do, and I wish them nothing but the best..'

Following the announcement of Lachey's engagement, a source, who claimed to be a close friend of Simpson's, told celebrity website Popeater: 'Even though Jessica wants to be happy for Nick, this is a very difficult time for her.

'Nick was the love of her life then, man, and he was her first, so she will always have a very special place in her heart for him. She's deeply saddened.'

37-year-old Lachey and Minnillo, 30 announced their engagement last week, after dating on and off since 2006.

Lachey proposed with a huge platinum and diamond engagement ring by jewellers Bader & Garrin, said to be worth an estimated $125,000.

The pair promptly flew off to Mexico to celebrate together where Minnillo was seen showing off her perfectly toned body in a variety of tiny teeny colourful bikinis.

 Former 98 Degrees star Nick and pop singer Jessica were married in 2002 but split three years later, when Jessica filed for divorce citing irreconcilable differences.

Their married life was caught on cameras for their reality MTV show Newlyweds.

Jessica later admitted she was furious when Nick jumped back into dating very soon after they split up.

She told Elle magazine in 2007, 'Oh, it hurt me. Two or three weeks later? Yeah, I'd say it kind of hurt me.'

But Simpson eventually moved on, enjoying high-profile romances with singer John Mayer and Dallas Cowboy Tony Romo.

The Dukes of Hazzard star is now in a happy relationship with NFL football player Eric Johnson.

The engagement announcement comes just a week after Nick and Jessica had an awkward encounter after both turning up for dinner dates with their partners at Red O on the same night.

Sources say the former couple stayed well clear of each other all night. Print this post
