Internet watchers of South Florida and all around speak of disturbing news of Internet Security faults.
Wi-Fi could be synced with devices on the Internet. T Eric Butler, developer of "Firesheep," showed that the free extension for Firefox browser, helps sync with an open Wi-Fi using personal identifiers of any subscriber to a wireless access point, e-mail account, Facebook profile, Windows Live Mail. It is stated that most of the systems will be working on unsecured networks, whether domestic or public, such as railway stations, airports, restaurants and hotels.
"Firesheep" makes use of security weakness which could not be used for a voluntary use.
Mr. Butler explains, "When you connect on a site, you start by submitting your user name and password. The server then verifies for a valid account and sends a cookie, a small identification file, stored and used by the browser for later requests."
It was further added that the sites are meant to secure passwords by encrypting the first connection, but rarely, they encoded the rest messages which stated: ‘The cookie travels in the open, the Wi-Fi allows any user intercepting it, and of course, using it simultaneously with the valid account owner.’
"The Firesheep extension" makes use of the mechanism by capturing the cookies that crosses through the open wireless networks. The developer's objective is not to allow burglarizing "Mr. X," but claiming that the issue is very serious.
Mr. Butler, pointing at Facebook and Twitter said, "Some popular sites still do not protect their users." Print this post
